Two years ago I was in a meeting with 4 Dutch ppl and 4 ppl from Spain.
We counted 17 different languages we could hold the meeting in. (Including Latin, Arabic, Esperanto, Portugese, and several Slavic languages)
We did it in English, because we are lazy and that is the easiest language
When in 1666 at the battle of Chatham we had had Marines, the whole world would have spoken Dutch.
In 1666 the Dutch under admiral Michiel de Ruyter defeated the English navy on the Thames river and those Brits didnt have a defense on land, so we could easilly have taken London. One mont later the Dutch Royal Marines Corps was created by de Ruyter.
At the British royal navy academy one of the first questions for the students is who was the greatest admiral of all times. Their professors answer always is: de Ruyter. In my opinion de Ruyter's decision not to use his sailors, carpers and bilgers to attack London on the ground is the biggest strategic failure ever.
